The Venetia Fair - Basically Just Does Karaoke EP (2013)

 

I The Venetia Fair hanno deciso di festeggiare il Natale con un EP di cover, canzoni di altre band scelte dai fan e reinterpretate dal quintetto di Boston alla propria maniera scanzonata. Ecco il comunicato che spiega la genesi di questo progetto:

Boston-based rock band The Venetia Fair has officially announced the release of their highly anticipated cover EP, “The Venetia Fair…Basically Just Does Karaoke”, which will hit digital retail platforms on December 24th, 2013.

Plans for this EP stem back to the band’s extremely successful Kickstarter campaign in 2012 which funded their acclaimed full-length record, “Every Sick Disgusting Though We’ve Got In Our Brain”. During this campaign, 6 donors purchased a prize which entitled them to choose a song for the band to cover - as a result the track listing for this EP was born.

Singer Benny Santoro comments, “We said we'd cover anything they wanted and we got 6 very different songs from different genres and different eras in music, each with their own challenges. We had no intention of simply playing these songs as they were originally played (especially Bohemian Rhapsody... we didn't wanna go anywhere near that song!) so we took our time and completely rebuilt them from the ground up to make sure we made them our own. Some of the songs we loved and had to figure out how to tweak them without totally ruining them and some of the songs we hated and had to figure out how to make them good, but I believe we rose to the challenge and, with the help of our Kickstarter backers, put together a very strange and very cool little cover EP. We definitely trashed some classic tunes, but it's all very tongue-in-cheek since we would never take a cover song seriously 'cause it's basically just doing karaoke..."

This pre-holiday treat will feature 6 well know songs (listed below) which have been pulled apart and pieced back together in the whacky, wonky TVF style that their fans have come to know and love.

THE VENETIA FAIR - Every Sick, Disgusting Thought We've Got In Our Brain (2013)

The Venetia Fair è un quintetto di Boston che ha alle spalle un album (The Circus del 2009) e un EP (The Pits del 2011) dove la musica, proprio come il titolo del primo lavoro può suggerire, subisce un trattamento caotico e teatrale. Decidere di ascoltare un loro album significa essere predisposti ad immergersi in un mondo carnevalesco fatto di freak, caroselli, orchestrine mariachi e reietti emocore.

I The Venetia Fair, nel secondo album Every Sick, Disgusting Thought We've Got In Our Brain, imbastiscono così una scorribanda di post hardcore che incontra l'opera rock, pagando tributo ai The Dear Hunter più teatrali, agli Hotel of the Laughing Tree, ma anche ad una band più prettamente progressive come gli svedesi A.C.T. Ma questo album trasuda anche una certa ambizione naif per una visione musicale grandiosa, anche troppo per le corde del gruppo, che infatti molto spesso gli sfugge di mano. Se esistesse un genere "rock steampunk" penso che i Venetia Fair potrebbero esservi inseriti senza problemi. Il loro è un rock orchestrale suonato con irruenza punk che sembra sbucato fuori dagli anni '30 con accenni alle operette vaudeville dei Queen e le soundtrack da film western di Ennio Morricone.

Il gruppo stesso approccia i propri strumenti con arrangiamenti al limite dello spasmo, carichi all'inverosimile, il cantante Benny Santoro si adatta benissimo a questa filosofia con enfasi melodrammatica talvolta stucchevole. Every Sick, Disgusting Thought We've Got In Our Brain per questo può risultare indigesto da quanto è debordante ed esagerato, anche se, in fondo, qualche buona idea riesce ad indovinarla.
