Dopo il progetto solista Invisibles, il cantante e chitarrista dei Sucioperro JP Reid torna solista con questo nuovo album Disguises, che esce ufficialmente oggi sotto il moniker Medals. Reid e suoi compagni nei Sucioperro hanno da poco fondato l'etichetta indipendente Medals for Everyone che d'ora in poi controllerà tutti i progetti associati ai Sucioperro. Questo Disguises è la prima produzione per la MFE e si muove in territori più pop rock rispetto alle opere abrasive del trio scozzese. Comunque sia trattiene sempre quel sentimento alternative che contraddistingue anche l'altro progetto di Reid, i Marmaduke Duke, portato avanti insieme all'amico Simon Neil dei Biffy Clyro, altra band di riferimento come paragone.
Fin dalla sua nascita questo blog ha sempre seguito con interesse l'evoluzione dei Sucioperro, band scozzese che ha all'attivo quattro album in studio e molti EP. I Sucioperro si sono mossi sempre su uno stile post hardcore, alleggerito da tendenze pop rock, vicino alle caratteristiche degli amici Biffy Clyro, senza però conseguirne lo stesso successo. Anzi, nell'ultimo lavoro Fused, uscito lo scorso anno, il gruppo ha perseguito la strada di un rinnovamento radicale all'insegna di sonorità dark, pesanti, aspre e spigolose. Abbiamo fatto qualche domanda al cantante e chitarrista JP Reid che, oltre ai Sucioperro, è coinvolto con Simon Neil dei Biffy Clyro nei Marmaduke Duke, dei quali attendiamo il capitolo finale della trilogia da loro progettata, e nel progetto solista The Invisibles.
Sucioperro significa "cane sporco" in spagnolo… perchè questo nome?
Perché per noi il nome era unico e diverso da tutti gli altri presenti.
Che cos’è cambiato tra il primo (post hardcore) e l’ultimo album (hard pop)?
Siamo cresciuti e abbiamo trovato la nostra strada. La scrittura è semplicemente diventata più istintiva.
Com’è nata la collaborazione con Simon Neil dei Biffy Clyro?
Grazie ad una forte amicizia e ad una sfrenata passione per la musica e creatività.

Molto spesso è musica meravigliosa di diversi generi. L’importante è che abbia cuore, una forte immaginazione, creatività ed ambizione.
Come registrate un album?
Da Pain Agency abbiamo sempre lavorato in maniera autonoma: provavamo, registravamo e poi ci rivolgevamo ad un ingegnere del suono per mixare tutto nella più giusta maniera ed intraprendere la decisione più giusta; Chris Sheldon per Pain Agency e The Heart String and How to Pull It e Chris Gordon per Fused. I testi, invece, nascono dall’immaginazione, da una continua lotta interiore, da esperienze di vita. A volte nascono prima i testi, a volte, la musica.
Perché ci sono così tanti riferimenti al mondo animale nei vostri album?
Semplicemente amo gli animali e noi siamo animali.
Siete pronti a Death of The Duke con i Marmaduke Duke?
Saremo pronti quando il duca è pronto.

JP Reid, leader della band scozzese Sucioperro, ha da poco pubblicato quello che può essere considerato il suo primo lavoro solista a nome Invisibles. Victory Hymns è disponibile tramite il sito bandcamp.
Invisibles is an international collective conceived by JP Reid of Sucioperro and Marmaduke Duke. It is based on the idea that everyone is an artist and that there is magic to be found in the everyday. Victory Hymns was written, performed, produced and mixed by JP and features contributions from fans from around the world. Work on the project began at the start of September 2011 and the album was... completed and ready for release within three months.
Friends and followers were asked to send ambient sound recordings, music, photographs and art to JP via the internet, the only stipulation being that it was their own original work. Contributions ranged from sound clips of daily life to art drawn by children to fully-orchestrated and professionally recorded tracks.
Taking these submissions JP crafted songs and soundscapes around them and used the visual contributions to form the artwork, so that everyone who had contributed became both inspiration and part of the work itself. The result is Victory Hymns, a truly original and innovative album.
Victory Hymns is released on 9th December 2011 and will be available to purchase as a download through Bandcamp at invisiblesx.bandcamp.com. A limited edition CD is planned for early 2012.
JP Reid has had previous commercial success as co-performer, co-writer and producer with Marmaduke Duke on the album Duke Pandemonium and the single Rubber Lover (14th Floor Records), both of which achieved a top 20 position in the UK singles and album charts.
