Il prog che viene dal nord - Intervista con gli Isbjörg

 

Nel 2019 la band danese Isbjörg si era presentata al pubblico del progressive rock con l'album Iridescent, un lavoro già maturo e con nulla da invidiare rispetto ai colleghi contemporanei con già alle spalle una solida carriera. Quell'album, ad ogni modo, è rimasto sotto i radar di molti appassionati, lasciando gli Isbjörg come il segreto meglio custodito del prog europeo. 

Strutturati come un sestetto formato da Frederik Ølund Uglebjerg (batteria), Mathias Bro Jørgensen (tastiere, voce), Dines Dahl Karlsen e Lasse Gitz Thingholm (entrambi alle chitarre), Mathias Schouv Kjeldsen (basso) e il nuovo arrivato Jonathan Kjærulff Jensen alla voce, che ha sostituito il dimissionario Niklas Jespersen, gli Isbjörg hanno posto l'accento su un prog dalle sfumature che attraversano metal, melodia e sinfonismo con la particolarità di dare al pianoforte un ruolo prominente nel sound totale. Il nuovo singolo Ornament, pubblicato il 27 gennaio, non è immune da questa prospettiva ma, come introduzione al secondo album attualmente alle ultime fasi di produzione (e previsto per fine 2023/inizio 2024), ci dà l'idea di una band molto più solida e sicura delle proprie doti di scrittura. Una nuova fase aperta, per forza di cose, dall'ingresso di Jensen ma anche dall'impulso di evolversi verso territori più immediati e allo stesso tempo preservando la matrice prog. Con tali premesse si spera che questa volta il nome degli Isbjörg si espanda oltre i confini danesi.

● Sono passati quasi quattro anni dall'uscita di Iridescent. Cosa è successo alla band in questa volta? 

Prima di tutto, ovviamente siamo stati colpiti dal Covid come tutti gli altri. Ha messo uno stop ai concerti dal vivo e ci ha costretti a concentrarci sulla scrittura e la registrazione del nostro secondo album in studio. Così, anche se siamo stati costretti a prenderci una pausa riguardo alcuni aspetti della band, ci siamo mantenuti occupati in altri! Purtroppo il nostro ex cantante ha scelto di lasciare gli Isbjörg nel 2022, evento che ha fermato il processo di registrazione dell'album. Fortunatamente, abbiamo subito trovato un sostituto in Jonathan, che ha portato una nuova energia al gruppo ed è stato molto edificante. Al momento stiamo dando gli ultimi ritocchi al prossimo album, mentre registriamo e realizziamo canzoni lungo il percorso - di cui Ornament è il primo assaggio!

● Come descrivereste il nuovo materiale rispetto a Iridescent? 

Dall'uscita di Iridescent abbiamo cambiato parecchio la nostra mentalità riguardo alla nostra musica. Ci piace pensare che stiamo ancora esplorando il genere e anche il nostro sound è cambiato poco dopo che Jonathan si è unito alla band. In questo nuovo album abbiamo cercato di abbracciare il concetto di "less is more" che a volte significa ridurre la complessità e concentrarsi maggiormente sulla melodia e sul suono. La voce di Jonathan ha una sensazione "più leggera", il che dà alle canzoni più un'espressione pop, piuttosto che rock o metal e quindi proviamo ad abbracciarla anche nella scrittura delle canzoni. Ma anche se potremmo avvicinarci al pop, ci sono ancora pochi passaggi in 4/4! 

● Pensate che Ornament mostri adeguatamente il nuovo percorso della band o ci saranno altri significativi cambiamenti?

Ornament è sicuramente un buon indicatore del suono del nuovo album. Il resto esplora alcuni degli elementi che Ornament mette in mostra. Contiene canzoni che sono più pesanti, più tranquille, più veloci e abbiamo inserito alcune sorprese musicali che non riveleremo ancora. 

● Dopo Iridescent e l'interruzione dovuta al Covid quando avete potuto iniziare a lavorare sul nuovo album?

 

Non possiamo proprio stabilire una data su quando abbiamo iniziato, perché alcune delle idee provengono dal processo di scrittura da Iridescent. Abbiamo lavorato al nuovo album da quando è uscito Iridescent e abbiamo concluso le canzoni più o meno nell'ultimo anno o giù di lì. Ma con l'abbandono del nostro ex cantante e con l'arrivo di Jonathan che si è unito a noi, abbiamo dovuto riscrivere le canzoni, quindi Jonathan potrebbe dare il suo contributo. 

● Negli ultimi anni la Danimarca ha attirato l'attenzione degli amanti del prog grazie alle band come VOLA e Mew, ne hai altri da consigliare? 

Oltre a questi due ottimi esempi, consigliamo di ascoltare Feather Mountain, Danefae e Cyano. I Feather Mountain suonano heavy prog metal. Il loro ultimo album è abbastanza personale e con alcuni grandi sentimenti nella loro musica. Il tema principale dell'album riguarda loro padre che soffre di demenza. I Danefae scrivono canzoni in lingua danese, utilizzando il progressive rock per descrivere la fede e la storia della nostra terra. I Cyano sono una grande math band, principalmente strumentale, ma quando cantano lo fanno in danese e parlano di salmone e della Norvegia! 

● Quindi, con un album in uscita, cosa riserva il futuro alla band? 

Speriamo di ricominciare a suonare! Ci piacerebbe suonare ai festival in Danimarca, ma davvero vorremmo anche noi raggiungere i fan del prog oltre i confini danesi. Speriamo in futuro di poterci esibire in paesi come Germania, Norvegia, Inghilterra e Italia! 

● Cosa stanno ascoltando i membri degli Isbjörg in questo momento? 

Come singoli membri della band, ascoltiamo una vasta gamma di generi, che include pop, punk, musical, rock, prog e molto altro ancora! Ma oltre alle band precedentemente menzionate (VOLA, Mew, Feather Mountain, Danefae, Cyano), ci piace ascoltare band come Haken, Moon Safari, Toehider, Moron Police e Agent Fresco. ● It’s nearly four years since the release of Iridescent. What happened to the band since then? 

First of all, we have obviously been affected by Covid like everyone else. It put a stop to gigging and forced us to focus on the writing and recording of our second studio album. So even though we were forced to take a break with certain aspects of the band, we’ve kept busy in others! Sadly, our former lead singer chose to leave Isbjörg in 2022, which halted the recording process of the album. Fortunately, we quickly found a replacement in Jonathan, who has brought whole new energy to the group, and it has been very uplifting. At the moment we’re putting the finishing touches on the coming album while recording and releasing songs along the way - which Ornament is the first taste of! 

● How would you describe the new material compared to Iridescent? 

Since the release of Iridescent we’ve changed our mentality regarding our music quite a bit. We like to think that we’re still exploring the genre and also our sound has changed somewhat after Jonathan has joined the band. On this new album we have tried to embrace the concept of ‘less is more’ which means at times cutting down on the complexity and focusing more on melody and sound. Jonathan’s voice has a ‘lighter’ feeling to it, which gives the songs more of a pop-expression, than rock or metal, and so we try to embrace that in the songwriting as well. But even though we might be embracing pop, there are still few passages in 4/4! 

● There will be other significant changes in style, or Ornament is already a good introduction to the new path of the band? 

Ornament is definitely a good indicator for the sound of the new album. The rest of the album explores some of the elements that Ornament showcases. It features songs that are heavier, quieter, faster and we’ve put in some musical surprises that we won’t reveal just yet. 

● After Iridescent and the Covid breakout, when you were able to start working on the new album? 

You can’t quite put a date on when we began, because some of the ideas are from the writing process from Iridescent. We’ve worked on the new album since we released Iridescent and the songs have been more or less finished for the last year or so. But with our former lead singer leaving, and Jonathan joining us, we’ve been rewriting the songs, so that Jonathan could put his own spin on them. 

● In recent years Denmark has attracted the attention of prog lovers thanks to bands like VOLA and Mew, do you have any others to recommend? 

Besides these two great examples we would recommend listening to Feather Mountain, Danefae and Cyano. Feather Mountain is heavy prog metal. Their newest album is quite personal and with some big feelings in their music. The main theme on the album is about their father who is suffering from dementia. Danefae writes songs in Danish, which portrays Danish faith and history all wrapped up in progressive rock. And Cyano is a great math band, who mostly play instrumental - but when they sing, it’s in Danish and is about salmon and Norway! 

● So, with an upcoming album to be released, what holds the future for Isbjörg? 

We hope to start gigging again! We would love to play at festivals in Denmark, but we also really want to reach prog fans from beyond the Danish border. We hope to play shows in countries like Germany, Norway, England and Italy! 

● What are you listening right now? 

As individual band members, we listen to quite a broad range of genres, which includes pop, punk, musicals, rock, prog and so much more! But besides the previously mentioned bands (VOLA, Mew, Feather Mountain, Danefae, Cyano), we enjoy listening to bands like Haken, Moon Safari, Toehider, Moron Police and Agent Fresco.
