Sleep Token e la strada che porta a "Sundowning"

Come ormai è nella propria tradizione misteriosa ed esoterica, anche per l'avvento dell'album di debutto degli evanescenti Sleep Token, che arriva dopo due EP e qualche singolo, è stato pensato qualcosa di particolare. A partire infatti dal 21 giugno (solstizio d'estate) il gruppo ha iniziato a rilasciare il primo dei dodici brani che faranno parte di Sundowning, il tutto procederà con cadenza regolare a distanza di due settimane, guarda caso al calare del sole, accompagnandoci alla fatidica data del 22 novembre quando sarà realizzato l'album. Tra i formati annunciati si parla anche di un box set contenente registrazioni precedenti.

Per ogni traccia è stato creato un simbolo e un artwork specifico, indicati nel sito ufficiale, come se ad ognuna di esse fosse attribuito un vero e proprio status di opera indipendente. In effetti con i due brani pubblicati sinora non solo gli Sleep Token mostrano approcci musicali differenti che proseguono nel loro mix di post metal e art rock, ma anche la capacità di operare una notevole crescita rispetto agli standard che loro stessi avevano impostato nei due EP.

SUNDOWNING: “Sundowning, or sundown syndrome, is a neurological phenomenon associated with increased confusion and restlessness in patients with delirium or some form of dementia. The term ‘sundowning’ was coined due to the timing of the patient’s confusion. For patients with sundowning syndrome, a multitude of behavioural problems begin to occur in the evening or while the sun is setting…”

From June to November, through 12 tracks and passing seasons, Sleep Token reveals an evenly-spaced, precisely-timed sequence of recordings that stand as both individual touchstones and carefully aligned musical pieces, all informed by a common emotional thread plus a flow of graphics and videos specific to each song; the end result is a digital and physical release of the album on November 22nd, with format choices embracing a bespoke box-set containing a variety of exclusive elements, including early recordings.

Starting with ‘The Night Does Not Belong To God’, the opening track on the album, the singles will be issued, in sequence, every two weeks at sundown (GMT). ‘The Night…’ arrives on summer solstice when the sun is highest in the sky in London, descending throughout the subsequent singles releases.
